I think I have tried every type of diet on the planet in my lifetime. Including the Keto, Cabbage Soup, liquid diet, fasting and so much more. I think when you find there is another new diet, it’s a hope that we will quickly, easily and miraculously lose all of the weight we want. We are looking for an easy, miracle diet to quickly get to our weight loss goals. And yes, you can lose weight on pretty much any diet you are on. But I have found that it is hard for me to stay on a diet for more than a few weeks. This is why I have come to the conclusion that the best way for me to stay on track with my weight is by watching my food intake. Let me tell you why…

May 2019

When I was in my early 20’s I worked in a gym where I signed people up at the desk and showed them how to use the equipment. I remember getting comments from customers about how they could have a figure like mine. I’m not trying to brag at all, that was the shape I was in at the time. I have always been interested in staying healthy and have found as the years have gone by, the weight started to creep on. I started to gain weight after having my last child. But I noticed when I got in my 40’s, I was not able to lose weight easily like I used to do. If I had gained 5-10 pounds before, I would just eat healthy for a couple of weeks and the weight would come off. But not when I hit 45. I found I was gaining weight at a rapid rate. This is when I first started to realize that I couldn’t just eat whatever I wanted, not exercise and expect to stay the same weight.

As I said earlier, I went on all of the diets. I found that I would lose weight on them, but as soon as I got off of the diet, the weight would not only come back, but I would also add about 10 pounds to my old weight. It was an endless battle.

I had just started a new business with my magazine back in 2011 and I was sitting at my desk for about 10-12 hours a day and I had completely ignored my health. I hadn’t been working out, but didn’t realize the weight I had gained until I saw the photo below on the left. I was shocked! This was my WAKE UP call! Never had I let myself go like I had in that photo. I decided to get serious about my weight…

In the Cowgirl Fit Planner that we email out when you join, we include 3 different types of weight loss plans that we suggest to do. But the one I have found out that is the best for me is the “Cutting Back Option.”

These are the steps that I did to lose weight. Just to let you know, I am not a Nutritionist or Dietician. And I’m not pretending to be one, but these are the things that helped me lose 35 pounds in 3 months. I have found that I love to eat and staying on a Keto or low fat, or the latest fad diet doesn’t work for me. This is what does.

When I am in a weight loss mode, this is what I do:

  1. Keep my calories under 1,300 a day.
  2. Keep track of what I eat with either Fitbit, or My Fitness Pal.
  3. Eat at least one favorite snack a day.
  4. Walk at least once a day, but I try to walk twice if I am needing to get weight off fast.
  5. A morning workout.
  6. Don’t eat after 7 pm
  7. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. (More if I can)
  8. I eat baked potatoes, white bread, cereal, cookies, cake, chips, but I have a limit. And I add in fruits and vegetables.
  9. Brush my teeth after 7pm
  10. Only weigh myself the day I start and the day I end.

These are the things I do and it works for me. Number 10 is key for me and let me tell you why. I used to weigh myself every day or 2-3 times per week. But I was finding that on the days I would retain water, or gain a pound or two, it would completely deviate me from my goals. It would be an excuse for me to quit. I would think, “Well this isn’t working anyway,” and I would more times than not, quit the whole diet. Weighing myself often was destructive for me. If I weigh myself at the beginning and then stay away from the scales until the end, it helps me stay motivated and keeps me focused on my goals. I don’t see that I might have gained a pound or two because of water retention or other things that would cause me to lose all motivation.

I’m not a body builder or trying to keep my body fat low. I eat so that I can be healthy and fit into the clothes that I like to wear. If I were to be a body builder, or needing to have a very low fat percentage, I would choose a different diet. I would be on a very low carb, high protein diet. But I am at the age where I don’t want that. I just want to be healthy and enjoy the food I love.

“A professor named, Mark Haub, limited himself to 1,800 calories a day. He ate Twinkies or another treat every three hours instead of meals, also consuming a protein shake and some vegetables over the course of the diet. A traditional Twinkie is only 150 calories making Haubs snacks low-calorie, albeit devoid of nutrients.

Haub lost weight, but does this mean that he is healthier? Well, actually, after eating junk food for 10 weeks his LDL, considered the bad cholesterol, decreased, while his HDL, or good cholesterol, increased by 30%. And he reduced his triglycerides by 39%. This suggests that losing weight alone will improve the health of an obese person.”

He shed 27 pounds in 2 months. He dropped his bad cholesterol by 20% and increased his good cholesterol by 20%. Now I’m not saying to go out and get Twinkies and eat only junk food. But I am saying that limiting your calorie intake works in losing weight and getting healthy.

I have included this professors story because it shows that it’s not so much what we eat, but how much. Of course you don’t want to eat junk food everyday, but you can have those things that you love. I became a Health Certified Coach back in 2015 and I have been able to help hundreds of women lose weight and get healthy through Cowgirl Fit.

I will be starting my 1,300 calorie a day eating again as I want to drop a few pounds before September. I have found that I might have a month or so where I eat a few more calories than I should, so I just get back on the 1,300 calorie diet again and can quickly get back on track before things get out of hand.

If you would like to do this with me, join the Cowgirl Fit Community as I will be reporting into the “Calorie Watching Lifestyle” group and the closed Cowgirl Fit Challenge closed F.B. group. This is where you can get support, ideas, motivation and accountability. I would love to have you do it with me and meet some of the other ladies in the community.

Why not get healthy now? Don’t wait any longer to get yourself in the clothes you want to wear and the size you want to be in. Stop getting out of breath when you walk up a flight of stairs. Let’s do this together and best of all, you won’t be spending a ton of money each month to do it!
